AN EARLY OVERVIEW : THE BIOGRAPHY OF ‘UTHMAN SHIHAB AL-DIN AL-FUNTIANI A MALAY INDONESIAN ARCHIPELAGO TRANSLATION SCHOLAR

ABSTRACT

This paper studies `Uthman Shihab al-Din al-Funtiani, a scholar who contributed a lot in expanding Islamic knowledge especially in the field of translation. However, his background and academic contributions has not been studied much. Therefore, by using the method of qualitative descriptive analysis and library research methods in collecting data, this article will introduce the biography of `Uthman Shihab al-Din al-Funtiani and his contributions in spreading Islamic knowledge. The study found that `Uthman Shihab al-Din al-Funtiani was a scholar who developed the Islamic knowledge in the Indonesian archipelago. It is also found that he has succeeded in translating masterpieces of the earlier scholars such as Ibn `Ata ‘Allah and Ibn Hajar` Asqalani, at the same time providing knowledge to the community. He also composed his own book for the benefit of ummah. Therefore, `Uthman Shihab al-Din Funtiani’s biography is seen as important to be studied since the information of this scholar must be known and needed to be highlighted to the current society.
