AN EARLY OVERVIEW ON BIOGRAPHY OF SYEIKH ISMAIL BIN HAJI MUHAMMAD ARIF AL-RAWI AL-NAQSYABANDI AL-KHALIDI (1850-1926) IN ULU BERNAM, SELANGOR

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to introduce Sheikh Ismail bin Haji Muhammad Arif al-Rawi, a religious and community figure in Ulu Bernam, Selangor. His name was placed in the oldest mosque in Selangor, the Sheikh Ismail Mosque and his grave adjacent to the tomb of the community figure who was also the first Penghulu of Tanjung Malim, Tun Mustafa bin Raja Kamala. The background of his life and his contribution was not found in any previous study. In this regard, this article will provide an early overview of the biography of Sheikh Ismail in Ulu Bernam, Selangor. Library study methods, collection of historical records and unstructured interviews were used for data collection while descriptive analysis was carried out based on the data obtained. His most important contribution in Ulu Bernam is to build and develop a mosque as a place of worship and centre of knowledge for the locals to this day.
